8:00 am – 8:30 am | Practical Tips on How to Start a Social Media Campaign

Faculty: Swati Kannan, MD, FACMS, FAAD, UC San Diego Health
Swati Kannan, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon and cosmetic dermatologist. She specializes in skin cancer and reconstructive surgery of the face and body and aesthetic treatments such as injectables, laser procedures, platelet-rich plasma for hair loss and skin rejuvenation, and hair transplants among others. Dr. Kannan believes in optimizing both surgical and aesthetic outcomes by integrating the highest standards of beauty with evidence-based science. She approaches patients as a whole when customizing a treatment plan to address their skin concerns. As an associate professor of dermatology, she is involved in the training of medical students and residents at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She has also taught fellow surgeons and has lectured at national conferences. Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Kannan was a surgeon at Kaiser Permanente and an associate professor of dermatology at UC Los Angeles (UCLA), where she started a pigmented lesions clinic for melanoma patients. Dr. Kannan completed her fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery and cosmetic dermatology at UC San Diego School of Medicine several years ago. She completed her dermatology residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and earned her medical degree from Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Dr. Kannan is board-certified in both dermatology and micrographic dermatologic surgery. She is a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery and the American Academy of Dermatology, and a member of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. @drswatikannan on Instagram.

8:30 – 9:00 AM | Practical Dermatopathology for the Practicing Dermatologist

Faculty: Antoanella Calame, MD, Poway Dermatology
Dr. Antoanella Calame received her MD degree from University of California, San Diego (UCSD) after graduating Summa Cum Laude from California Lutheran University. She completed her residency in Dermatology at UCSD, followed by a Dermatopathology Fellowship at University of Texas, Southwestern (UTSW) in Dallas, Texas, where she trained with Dr. Clay Cockerell, one of the world leaders in the field of Dermatopathology. Dr. Calame is board certified in Dermatology and Dermatopathology and holds over thirty active state licenses. She is the author of a book on Cutaneous Manifestations of HIV disease and has published numerous peer reviewed scientific papers. Dr. Calame is an invited speaker at local and national conferences every year. She has a special interest in melanoma and melanocytic lesions and is actively involved with the newest clinical and molecular techniques used in the diagnosis and prognosis of cutaneous melanoma. Dr. Calame is the founder and director of Compass Dermatopathology, Poway Dermatology, and the Dermatology Center of La Jolla. She practices Dermatopathology full time and spends a limited time seeing Dermatology patients. Dr. Calame teaches Dermatology and Dermatopathology to the UCSD and Navy Dermatology residents, as well as Dermatology and Pathology residents who come to rotate with her from all over the United States and the world. She has received the annual Excellence in Teaching Award from UTSW and UCSD four times. Dr. Calame’s interests outside of work include tennis, yoga, camping, and spending time with her family.

  • Interpret pathology reports and collaborate with their dermatopathologist to decrease medical liability and provide better patient care.

9:00 – 9:30 AM | Updates in Laser Therapy

Faculty: Ray Jalian, MD
Dr. Ray Jalian, Board Certified Dermatologist by the American Board of Dermatology, brings to the practice some impressive credentials. With a Dermatology Fellowship at Harvard/Mass General following his medical training at UCLA and Cedars Sinai, Dr. Jalian has acquired particular skills with fractional laser. His laser specialties include: 1. acne scarring; 2. trauma and surgical scars; and 3. photo damaged skin.

Dr. Jalian graduated phi beta kappa from the University of California, Los Angeles with a bachelors of science degree in microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics. He attended medical school at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA where he graduated Alpha Omega Alpha. He served as chief resident at UCLA followed by a clinical fellowship at the Wellman Center of Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Research interests include pathogenesis and treatment of acne and vascular malformations. Prior to joining the practice, Dr. Jalian was on staff at UCLA Department of Medicine in Santa Monica.

9:30 – 10:00 AM | Skin Cancer Care for Underserved Populations

Faculty: Naiara Barbosa, MD, Mayo Clinic
Dr. Naiara S. Barbosa is board-certified in Dermatology and Mohs surgery by the American Board of Dermatology. Dr. Barbosa received her medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed her Preliminary Internal Medicine year, Dermatology residency, and Mohs Surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She subsequently served as the Director of Mohs Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology, and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of New Mexico, Department of Dermatology, from 2018 to 2021. Dr. Barbosa joined the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, as a Senior Associate Consultant in December 2021. Her clinical areas of expertise include diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers, procedural dermatology, and skin surveillance in immunosuppressed patients. Dr. Barbosa's academic interests include non-melanoma skin cancer research, skin cancer care and access for underserved populations, and diversity and inclusion advocacy. Dr. Barbosa is an active member of multiple dermatology societies and volunteers as a mentor for underrepresented minority students nationwide.
